The arrival of PAA's S-42 in Honolulu in November, 1935 was a major crowd attracting event as it flew past Diamond Head. The 2270 mile flight took 21. 5 hours at an average speed of 130 mph. Directly below the S-42 is the Waikiki Natatorium which was once a major sport swimming facility and World War I Memorial. Ironically after decades of neglect, its now restored exterior looks as good as it did in the great years when Olympic champion Duke Kahanamoku once swam there. |
