The S-42 "Hong Kong Clipper" at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. While battleships and cruisers (including the USS Arizona) were moored around Ford Island, the south end had large concrete seaplane ramps (which are all still there) used for the Navy's many seaplanes. Pan Am used this area by Navy permission from 1935 to 1940 until their own facility was built near the Pearl City side of Pearl Harbor. Note that the Sikorsky-42 was actually an amphibian (land and sea flight operations) unlike the M-130 and B-314 seaplanes. |

The "Hong Kong Clipper", seen here, was bombed and strafed when Japanese planes attacked Hong Kong on December 8, 1941, and was destroyed. |
