Charles Lindbergh seen here with the brilliant Russian-American aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky on a pioneering flight of the S-42 "American Clipper". Pan American benefited greatly from having these two working together for PAA. Lindbergh supplied the outlines for the aircraft's service requirements while Sikorsky designed his beautiful and very flight-worthy amphibious seaplanes around them. In the 1930's the seaplane was considered the best commercial airliner design as few places had operational airfields, but nearly every major Atlantic and Pacific city had harbors. And they made trans-Pacific travel a reality. |
