Flying in an Inter-Island Airways S-38 over what is today known as Hawaii Kai. The passengers here would pass by Koko Head, probably clearing the top by only a hundred feet or so at a cruising speed of probably 70-80 mph (the S-38 could do 110 mph) and then suddenly find themselves staring directly down at an ancient sea filled volcano crater. This was Hanauma Bay, a beautiful coral and tropical fish sanctuary. The S-38 could easily drift down and land in the shallow waters and let passengers see the reef fish from only a few feet away. |
