Passengers deplaning from their PAA B-314 at Treasure Island, San Francisco, still wearing their fresh tropical flower leis from their previous day in Hawaii. In the 1930's this was a pretty remarkable thing as it wasn't possible any other way for a civilian airline passenger to have such an experience, other than by flying the PAA Clippers. Steamships took at least five days to sail from Hawaii to San Francisco, causing your beautiful and fragrant flower lei to start to wilt. But here, Hawaii was just one overnight flight away. For some it was almost equivalent to a trip to the moon and many saw it as a "once in a lifetime" experience. |
