Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese planes swooped in to bomb and strafe Wake Island. The "Philippine Clipper", there at the time, received numerous bullet holes, and two crewmen were seriously wounded. But the sturdy seaplane was stripped of baggage and cargo and flew back to Pearl Harbor with every civilian they could carry. U.S. Marines and a number of Pan Am employees stayed behind. The Japanese began a continuous air and sea assault and overran the hugely outnumbered U.S. Marine defenses after two weeks. |
