The "China Clipper" heads out over the wide blue Pacific- the Golden Gate bridge is still under construction, and although hard to see here, the S.F- Oakland bridge is also still unfinished. The 1930's were a very exciting era for the United States as advanced technology was being used to build giant bridges and launch trans-Pacific seaplanes. But Imperial Japan did not like this at all. It considered the Pacific its own domain and was building up considerable military forces and bases throughout the Pacific. They had their own seaplanes in development and Japanese submarines regularly cruised off of Hawaii and West Coast ports taking readings. |
