A classic PAA illustrated map from the 1930's shows the clipper route across the Pacific- S.F-

Honolulu- Midway- Wake- Guam- Manila- Macao (Hong Kong). Hawaii was the furthest hop but a fully loaded M-130 could just make it. Wake Island was extremely important also as it was a U.S. possession that provided a vital stopover. Imperial Japan, allied with the Nazi's, saw Pan Am as a U.S. spy operation.
