It was a Japanese seaplane, the Yokosuka E14Y1, which has the unique distinction of being the only Japanese (or AXIS) plane to actually bomb the U.S. mainland. Operating from the Japanese Imperial Navy submarine I-25, the plane took off and bombed an unpopulated coast area of Oregon in September, 1942. Obviously this was just a symbolic gesture but it was the reason why the U.S. maintained extensive blackout and camouflage procedures until 1944 in Hawaii and West Coast American cities and defense plants. No one really knew for sure what Japan's capabilities were with its submarine launched seaplanes and submarine refueled seaplane bombers. |
