The Japanese Imperial Navy at the beginning of WW-II was the most powerful navy in the World, with 10 aircraft carriers, 12 battleships, 1500 highly trained combat experienced pilots, many of whom flew the Zero, a high performance fighter capable of 345 mph- beyond anything the U.S. or Britain had in

inventory. They also had seaplane fighter aircraft and were building the largest submarines in the world, capable of holding several seaplanes each and had

torpedo technology beyond anything the U.S. Navy possessed. Japan also planned major submarine and seaplane attacks on the West Coast and Panama

Canal. The Japanese were big believers in seaplanes and built a huge number of them. Of this variety, a total of 3,460 Japanese seaplanes were in the Pacific War. They also produced 433 larger flying boats to cover bombing and transport needs.  Until U.S. production and new technology could catch up (by 1943), the U.S. had to use skillful intelligence gathering, well timed attacks and luck.

Many Americans died or were captured as Japanese forces overran the Pacific.
