One of the surprises after the end of the Pacific War

was how very serious Imperial Japan was about a

huge assault on the West Coast and Panama Canal.

This Aichi M6A1 "Mountain Haze" attack bomber

with 1340 horsepower V-12 engine had folding wings

which allowed three of them to be stored aboard huge Imperial Navy I-400 submarine "aircraft

carriers." Their primary mission was to destroy the

locks on the Panama Canal, making it useless. Plans

included landing Japanese Marine commandos on West Coast beaches using these huge submarines,

to destroy U.S. defense plants in daring Kamakazi raids. Only continuous pressure on destroying

Japanese war production prevented these attacks.
