Pilot Jimmy Doolittle, on the mainland was the winner of the air speed record in 1925, and would go on to be an Army Air Corp General who led the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April, 1942. Never before attempted, his team of B-25 crews applied the full concept of Gen. Billy Mitchell's ideas by flying medium bombers off the deck of the Navy carrier Hornet and bombing Tokyo and Yokosuka Navy Base as America's first response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. |
