A Navy PN-9 Flying Boat over Waipio peninsula is the 1920's. Out of picture on the right would be Ford Island. Off the PN-9's wingtip is the middle loch of Pearl Harbor and it was by the shoreline that Pan American set up their Hawaii base in 1940. In the 1920's the Army had their own seaplanes and flew them out of Luke Field, on Ford Island. They later built Hickam Field and Luke Field and all of Ford Island was turned over to the Navy. It was only a decade earlier, in 1910, that a pilot named Bud Mars flew a Curtiss P-18 which became Hawaii's very first airshow and powered flight. |
