Charles Lindbergh - Shoots down Japanese planes in P-38 Lightning as a Civilian pilot

Charles Lindbergh may very likely be one

of the few civilians who fought in a World

War II aerial dogfight. He wasn't supposed

to be in combat, according to the Geneva

Conventions, but Japan had never signed them anyway. He had been at an Army Air Force

P-38 Base in the Pacific, where he was showing pilots how to save gas using better throttle

settings, when the P-38 Lightning he was flying was jumped by Japanese fighters. He turned and shot at least one of them down. The

incident was not widely publicized during the war for various political reasons and it was

not considered an "official combat kill".
