KINGFISHER- Directing and photographing was the primary Pacific War job

Islands. The airfield is pockmarked with shell craters and below the tail of the Kingfisher can be seen a number of partially

destroyed aircraft, including a twin-engine bomber. Kingfishers rarely got directly

involved in battles as their role was to direct ship gunfire onto targets and search for the position of enemy ships. Not well armed, they had to make a run for it if spotted

by Japanese fighter aircraft. However,

one did shoot down a Japanese plane

during the battle for Iwo Jima in 1945.
