High up in the fading evening sky a new PAA

Boeing B-314 flies over… not Xanadu of some mystical lost world… but Treasure Island,

located out in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Filled, leveled and joined to a small

island called Yerba Buena, it became the home of the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939. Also visible at lower right is a Sikorsky S-38, probably also owned by PAA. This became Pan Am's western base of

operations after the Expo. But when WW-II came, it became a U.S. Navy base and some

of the more exotic structures disappeared.
