More "China Clipper" links

Japanese agents had a special ax to grind against the "China Clipper" as it represented a clear symbolic link between the United States with China. Japan had already invaded China and was in the process of destroying the Chinese    Armies that resisted. They intensely wanted the Pan Am flights, and the "China Clipper" in

particular, to fail. Despite targeting the "China Clipper" the seaplane survived most of the war.

The great irony of Japan's attempts to sabotage the "China Clipper", going back to as early

as 1935, was that the "China Clipper" was

ultimately used in World War II to fly top secret missions to Africa to pick up uranium, which was in turn used in the top secret "Manhattan Project" at Los Alamos. This project of course resulted in the  development of the atomic bomb which subsequently was used on Japan to end the Pacific War. The "China Clipper" was

destroyed in a crash in Trinidad, Jan., 1945.
