The "Hawaii Clipper" Disappearance The "Hawaii Clipper", an M-130, which had inaugurated trans-Pacific services in 1936, vanished without a trace in July, 1938 during the Manila to Guam route. The "Hawaii Clipper" pilot was Leo Terletsky, one of Pan Am's most experienced clipper pilots. One of the best motives for the Japanese hijacking of the clipper was that it also carried several million dollars destined for Chinese resistance fighters. |

The Manila to Guam route was along a prime Japanese Imperial Naval area of operations in 1938 and as the Panay incident later showed, Japan would not hesitate to attack and destroy American symbols, especially if it could be made to appear as an "accident". The clipper may have simply been shot down, or it may have been forced down to also acquire parts of the seaplane for military analysis. But there is no certainty as not a trace of the seaplane was ever found, including any evidence of a crash at sea. |
